The Refugee Council of Brandenburg

Who we are

The Refugee Council is a non-governmental organization operating in all of Brandenburg. The Refugee Council was founded in 1994 as a network organization of people with and without a refugee status or background, representatives of information centers, charities, and churches as well as action groups.

We fight for a non-racist, solidary society and for improving the living conditions of refugees. Being a non-governmental organization, the Refugee Council is politically independent. We stand up for refugees and support them in their struggle for full access to legal rights as well as unrestricted participation in society. Our conviction is that the protection of human rights must take precedence over border defense policies.

We demand that refugees and migrants are granted the right to permanent residence. We strictly reject deportations and oppose any exclusion and isolation of refugees by rounding them up in camps. The repatriation of refugees may solely take place freely and voluntarily. In a nutshell, we demand equal rights for all.

Consultation

The Refugee Council does not offer advice on individual cases but can make contact to information centers that provide information on the asylum procedure and general migration issues. Currently, our helpline is available in English and German. An overview of local consultation and advise services can be found here.

Our helpline is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11am to 1pm.

Open meetings

The Refugee Council holds open meetings that take place every last Wednesday of each month at 5pm in the basement of the Projekthaus at Rudolf-Breitscheid-Str. 164, 14482 Potsdam.

These meetings aim to facilitate political networking and address changing asylum policy issues, e.g. access to the labor market, Dublin deportations, family reunion, etc. If you would like to attend a meeting and are in need of a translator, please contact us in advance. Also in advance, please check our website or contact our office to learn if the venue or the time of our meeting has changed. All meetings are open to the public; registration is not required. Please note, however, that the facility is not barrier-free.

Brandenburg Connect

The Refugee Council Brandenburg promotes the empowerment and networking of self-organized refugee initiatives. Within the framework of our project Brandenburg Connect, workshops, training sessions, and network meetings are held. They provide the opportunity for critical exchange on current refugee policy issues, empowerment, and expertise acquisition. These events are usually open to anyone who is interested. We offer translation services and childcare.

At a large summer campus, which takes place again this year (6th–8th of July 2018), refugees, representatives of initiatives, activists, and volunteers from all over Brandenburg are given the opportunity to meet and join their forces by developing common strategies and organizing their campaigns cooperatively.

If you wish to receive further information about upcoming events like the summer campus, or if you are interested in networking with other refugee initiatives, feel free to subscribe to our multilingual mailing list: connect@fleuchtlingsrat-brandenburg.de
